DiscipleshipPlan was created by the pastors of Riverside Church in Red Bank, New Jersey. We built the Inventory and the Discipleship Planner for the people of our own church, to help ordinary followers of Jesus take a real next step. Now we’re sharing them with other churches.
What we believe
We hold to the historic Christian faith expressed in the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed: one God, eternally Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Jesus Christ, fully God and fully human, who died for our sins and rose from the dead; salvation by God’s grace alone, through faith in Jesus Christ alone; and the Bible as the inspired and authoritative Word of God.
How the Inventory was made
The 21 statements in the Inventory come from two places. We studied existing research on the markers of spiritual maturity, looking for what actually changes in the lives of people who are growing in Christ. And we brought our theological convictions about what a disciple of Jesus is: someone growing in his Presence, in his Community, and in his Mission.
We then refined the statements through several rounds of review so they would be clear, honest, and useful for planning a next step.
What the Inventory is for
The Inventory is a starting point for prayer and for conversation with someone who walks with you. Your scores don’t measure your worth or your standing with God, and they aren’t a clinical diagnosis. As the Planner puts it, the Inventory informs; the Spirit leads.
